Green Spaces
As being called “the Greenest City on Earth”, Curitiba lives up to that title. There are a total of 16 parks, and 14 forests. This might not seem a lot, but there are over 1000 green spaces, nearby to residential areas, and freely accessible by everyone. For the past few decades, Curitiba has created many green areas, to allow more greenery in their city. According to statistics, Curitiba provides almost 600 square feet of green space for each resident. However, the parks not only serve to provide more greenery, and to make the city more liveable. It is there to also provide a useful job, flood management. The parks replace the usage of canals, helping to reduce floods in Curitiba. This allows sustainable flood management. This is because this method of flood management considers not only reducing flooding, but at the same time allows more greenery, which makes life more comfortable, and at the same time benefits the environment, as more trees and grass are being planted.
Not only does Curitiba have great parks, but with the parks, there are also artificial lakes, which are also to help prevent flooding. This more so adds on to the aesthetics of the city, while allowing wildlife and humans to live in Curitiba more comfortably, sustaining the environment, and the quality of life. Everything has been created according to the citizens needs, prioritising the comfort of the residents. In the small city of Curitiba, the government has helped planted 1.5 million trees. This has helped sustain the environment, as more trees mean more oxygen and less carbon dioxide, due do them absorbing carbon dioxide. Furthermore, having more trees means helping the ecosystem, as it gives wildlife more places to live.
Lastly, Curitiba has an environment legislation. The aim of this environment legislation is to protect the plants and vegetarian. Because of the rapid urban growth in Curitiba, many plants are dying, in order to provide space for new buildings. The legislation prevents this from happening, by making sure that precious plants are not cut down in parks, to protect them. More importantly, it also plants many fruit trees, flower seeds, and much more. Apart from that, many other plants and vegetarian are also planted in greenhouses, to allow the urban plan to continue progressing, while bringing the harm to natural resources to a minimum.
To summarise, all of these green spacing has been made for the comfort of the citizens. While attaining sustainability, Curitiba aims to make their city as liveable as possible. Even lakes, while serving a different purpose such as flood controlling, it is still designed for beauty, allowing the citizens most comfort, while at the same time providing them fresh air and greenery.
